We come from Southern California so Mexican food is our almost daily fare. So, we were just a little anxious at trying a Mexican restaurant in Kentucky, but Yelp reviewers said it was good. We agree. It isn't spectacular Mexican food, but it's darn good and fresh. Chips (served warm), salsa and guacamole are outstanding.

Eh,..it's ok. A good option for a quick, informal bite if you don't worry about wasting money on 'meh...'. As far as good "Mexican" (i.e. Americanized Mexican food), it's fine. Their chips and salsa are good (chips are actually really fresh, usually)...the 'spicy' salsa is actually spicy, which is nice. Nothing brilliant, nothing horrible. And in this part of the country, that's a rousing endorsement. My problems are two-fold: 1. service 2. portions / serving plates. So, point 1, service is iffy. More than once, it's been nearly impossible to get the server to actually look at me while otherwise attempting to get my party's order (I mean, I'm guessing that she's not just standing there for giggles) so that I have any idea whether she is just going about some other business while I talk to myself. There is no notion that the server is there to do anything other than deliver orders to the kitchen. Moreover, It seems like the less busy, the less the servers make an effort. Usually, I'm never offered a single refill on a soda during lunch, which is odd, because my glass usually gets to about a third full before the food gets to the table. My larger problem is that for Bowling Green (not exactly a thriving megolopolis, no farm-to-table or all-organic ingredients)...their lunch prices for healthy options are crazy. While I used to find more cheese-meat-sauce-laden items appealing, I've recently explored more healthy eating. Salads here are ICEBERG mix, a quarter to a third of a split chicken breast (sliced), a couple of cuke and onion slices...in total, the volume of a lunch entree salad with protein at Garcia's is about similar to the volume of a side salad most places (even fast food places) at three to four times the cost. They apparently use small pasta / wide rimmed soup plates for their salads. That's pathetic. I'm not saying that they need to increase the protein serving size, but there was literally less lettuce in the salad that I ordered for lunch than what was shredded as an condiment on an order of tacos. That's crappy, especially as the salad cost just under twice as much as the tacos. Good peppery salad dressing, though. Ingredients do seem quite fresh.

Great/fresh salsa, HUGE margaritas!, really good chicken tacos that are not drenched in cheese, even the chimichanga was lightly fried and not too healthy. Good for kids and lively atmosphere. Super fast service. Friendly.

Great service, very fast and friendly. Quickly filled drinks, salsa and chips. Salsa is tasty. Overall food is bland. I had their XL steak burrito and I may as well have been a steak taco folded over minus flavor. I also had the chicken taco, zero spice, zero flavor. Two stars for service.

Never thought I'd find tolerable Mexican in the wilds of Kentucky, and actually managed to find several places in Bowling Green which were decent. Garcia's was probably the best of the bunch. The exterior is unassuming and you'd expect the usual 'family Mexican' (read: Americanized) fare. There's definitely a tint of that to their menu. But they do it well, with excellent fajitas, tacos, enchilades verdes, and so on. The real kicker is that for what it is, it's dirt cheap, especially at lunchtime. For a full-service place with a bar, you can get lunch for two for $15, and dinner with drinks for $30. Not bad!

I got their veggie fajitas, which had a lot of great veggies and were cooked great. Their beans were fantastic, rice was a bit crunchy. My biggest issue was nobody on staff seemed to know what was in their food. I asked about some of their sauces being gluten free, and I think 5 or 6 people came to my table to ask what I was talking about. I eventually just asked if they used white flour to thicken up their sauces and still nobody knew if they did or not. So I went with something else. The salsa was pretty good, but those black beans were so flavorful. I think they were my favorite thing I had.

  • Brandon B.

I don't have much to say other than that the food is bland, the ambiance is obnoxious, and the menu is pretty much the same as any other Mexican joint. I'm a fajita connoisseur, and my chicken fajitas from this place were horrible.

Passing thru town and read the other reviews. This place is great. Everything was fresh. Will return

Really dissatisfied after arriving and being told there was only coke and sweet tea to drink, then shortly after receiving the menu seeing there was far more options. I knew right away I was going to eat food in the same category as taco bell after seeing MULITAS being made with flour tortillas. Para los gavachos esta bien pero no manches tanto. Un tristeza.

As a Hispanic I was terribly unimpressed. The sauces are all watered down. When ordering a dish with some "HEAT" they gave me bland. If you want to be a bland American who goes for a gringo version of a taco salad and margarita, knock yourself out at this joint. But I guarantee you it is far from Mexican cuisine.

This place is not good at all. They sat us and never brought us menus. After 5 minutes I got up and grabbed them myself. Another 5 minutes and the server finally came. When we asked for the bill, he took his sweet time and even stopped to talk with all the other employees conjuring at the back of the restaurant. Women's restroom was gross. The paper towels were sitting on the counter in standing water. I dried my hands on my jeans. The food. Not bad, just not good. I asked for Carne Asada tacos. The limes they gave me had no juice (you know those ones that look normal, but have nothing). I find this a serious issue at a Mexican restaurant. My BF ordered steak fajitas. They were exactly the same as my tacos, just he made them himself. The best thing was the rice and beans, and even those weren't that great. We will not be returning.

Delicious margarita! I ordered the fish tacos and they were the best I've ever had. I'm from Louisville and in town visiting relatives. This place is definitely worth going to just for the fish tacos! Light and fresh tasting! My husband got the vegetarian quesadilla and my son got chicken strip and fries . Everything was great!

This is where I go for my birthday every year because I love it so much. The best salsa. And the best fish tacos. I can't comment on anything else on the menu because I get the same thing every time :)

Passing through Bowling Green visiting my brother at WKU and checked Yelp to find the best Mexican place. Garcia's was the highest rating and it did not disappoint! I went with another reviewer's recommendation and got the fish tacos. They were fresh and EXCELLENT. The side of black beans and rice were a great compliment. The black beans had Parmesan on them so it made for a great flavor. Chips and salsa were delicious and the service was great! Well priced, a good value. Highly recommend.

Really really good. Everything tasted super fresh and well seasoned. I had the fish tacos which may have been the best I have ever had. Husband had taco loco and raved about it. Delicious margarita and guacamole. So glad we came here on our way back to Nashville!

I read the reviews and decided to give this place a try while visiting the caves. I decided to stick to the highly reviewed fish tacos and fajitas. I'm not sure what to say, the fish tacos were plain with no flavor whatsoever, I would avoid them. The fajitas were ok but the highlight was the flan which was great. Service was polite but untrained in making sure there are enough napkins or something as simple as water. I'm sure they can do better !!

Fantastic food fantastic service unlike any Mexican food we have back home. White corn chips were excellent. The bomb!

Passing through Bowling Green and found this gem. Friendly service and great food. Loved the fish tacos. They make them with grouper instead of the typical cheap fish. Great guacamole

Amazing! Chips and salsa were the best I've had. Everything was so fresh.

Fabulous enchilada and taco combo! The green sauce wasn't too spicy and the rice melts in your mouth. Not too over cooked and super moist! The best Mexican food I've had in a long time. Would have liked to have seen Cinco de Mayo themed specials but the pricing is still excellent. Great portion sizes and awesome homemade salsa!

Wife and I were looking for something to eat, she said Mexican food, I Yelped it and this was the choice. The chips come out hot and fresh. The cheese dip was amazing. I had the fish(grouper) fajita and it was simply the best fajita I have ever had! Everything was fresh and after a long day traveling, I couldn't ask for anything better. If you find yourself craving Mexican in Bowing Green, you should check this place out!

Ohmygosh so good. Fish tacos and guac--fresh, flavorful, yum!!! And I usually only eat Mexican food in CA.

We ended up here based on the reviews and our love for Mexican food. After some familiarity we realized we had stopped here before 2 years ago. Both times were fantastic and will choose to make this restruant a bowling green stopping point. We both got taco loco. Yum!

Other than the awkward greeting from our waiter, the waitstaff at Garcia's was friendly and helpful. The interior is, ehh, nothing cool... but, hey, this is a Mexican restaurant we're talking about. Minus a star for an ugly, semi-gross bathroom. Maybe it's weird, but a restaurant's bathrooms need to be in tip-top shape in order for the restaurant to pull five stars out of me. The food was excellent. As Ashley S said in her review, the salsa is the perfect texture and the perfect taste. The salsa has a citrus twist to it--and usually I'm not a fan of citrus in salsa--but it's a winner at Garcia's. I had the chicken fajitas ("Garcia's Fajitas") and they were great--lots of sizzling, lots of deliciousness. Bottom line: Garcia's is a solid choice for Mexican food in BG. I recommend it.

Stopped here driving home. Bowling Green is the half way point. Reviews on Yelp made this place look promising. Well the food was AMAZING! Chips were fresh, and the salsa was so fresh and tasty. I ordered the slow roasted pork taco with salsa verde. The pork was tender and delicious and the fresh cilantro and onions with the salsa verde, so delicious. The salsa verde was spicy without a lasting burn.(I love hot and spicy things) The beans and rice were nice and fresh. I don't usually love Mexican rice but this was really good. Our next trip through Bowling Green will definitely include a stop here. Wait staff was friendly and the service was very fast. No complaints what so ever!!

Taco Loco is my favorite dish! Staff is always friendly and very prompt service. I've been in alone as well as with large groups and have had very consistent food and service. I will choose Garcia's over the chain restaurants everyday.

Garcia's Grill is little more expensive than some the other mexican restraunts in Bowling Green because the quilaty of the food. It seems like at most other places you get more food that is one reason I will not give this place five stars. The service is usually friendly and decent speed. The chips are always fresh I cant stand stale chips! The salsa like other reviews state is the best in town. Very flavorful and big chucks of herbs and tomatoes! I have many to Garcia's a few times and have always enjoyed what I ordered. I like the taco salad with chicken, chicken loco which chicken cheese beans rice i think tortillas, and today I got the chicken and Mexican nachos. I cant remember the excat name but its st. louie something ha They didnt have queso but the mozzarella was yummy and I loved that their was lots of chunks of avocados on there :) I always love that this place used alot black beans ;). I will go again :) I would like try the fajitas. In the winter I love to get cup of crab bisque and queso with chips. It is enough to warm you up and fill you up :)

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in town. Ingredients are fresh. They changed the menu, though, and took off the pork carnitas, which were my favorite.

Everything seemed fresh and moist. Some of the best carne asada tacos I've ever had. The meat was tender and perfectly seasoned. The onions were nicely sautéd and still had crunch to them, fresh jalapeños and pico on a corn tortilla make up one of the best tacos you'll find anywhere. The tamale was also very good but let's be honest when has a tamale ever been that bad or that great? Skip the tamale, unless you totally love them, and just order carne asada tacos. They'll bring you chips and salsa which is good but ask for the hot salsa. Very flavorful and good amount of spice without killing you.

Whenever considering a Mexican restaurant, the very first qualification should always always always be: Salsa!! Garcia's has the best salsa in town! A good dose of flavor with a bit of a kick, and not so chunky that it's too difficult to scoop with the tortilla chips. My two staples at Garcia's (and all Mexican Restaurants) are the Chicken Taco Salad and the Chef Special (Chicken, Queso, and Rice). Both dishes are fairly bland and "typical" Mexican-style dishes, but the best part about ordering them at Garcia's is getting to layer on the salsa! This is the one Mexican restaurant I frequent the most in Bowling Green. I dine in the restaurant with a standard group of friends, ranging in ages under 5 and over 40. We've never left unsatisfied or hungry... any of us! There is typically enough seating, even when we have groups over ten people. Sunday lunch is usually crowded, but we usually sit down right away (the longest I've ever waited was about twenty minutes). Not horrible considering the wait at other places around this time. Also, the staff is very timely and always smiling and joking with us. A very welcoming atmosphere with great Mexican food!!

Average, but it was a bit overpriced for what we got. Small portions, but it did seem freshly prepared.

Best Mexican restaurant in Bowling Green! Their salsa is wonderful and the fish tacos are to die for!! Service is always quick and the food is always fresh!

The best Mexican in bg. My favorites are fish tacos, quesadilla Garcia, tamales (the sauce on it is great). Guacamole is real, not out of a can.

Used to be the best place to go for Mexican in Bowling Green. Still have the best salsa and mango margaritas and fish tacos which will keep me visiting, but probably not as often as I used to because of the new place in town. The problem with Garcia's is definitely not food and drinks, it is the service. With a few exceptions, the servers are ultra slow, inattentive, and not very friendly. Interior also needs some upgrades to keep up with two newer Mexican restaurants in town.

Delicious! Great Mexican food, and a nice variety on the menu without being overwhelming. I had spinach quesadillas that had fresh spinach in them. My companion had the tacos al pastor. He raved about them, and he is VERY picky about Mexican food. We will definitely be back!

My mother and I love Mexican food, so we decided to try Garcia's. There were a lot of cars there so we figured they would be good. We waited for about 15 minutes to be seated, even though more than half the tables were empty. Finally someone came up to us and asked if we were waitling on something, we told them we were waiting to be seated, so he seated us. I ordered the chicken fajitas and my mother ordered a burrito that was supposed to have a ton of veggies in it. Took about 30 minutes to get the food, he brought us the wrong order, so we waited another 15 minutes for our food. Finally we got our food and it was the tiniest chicken fajita I have ever seen. About 1/5 the size fajitas you get at other Mexican restaurants. The food was below sub-par. My rice was minute rice they had flavored. The beans were good. The fajita cost about $11 and was horrible. Now on to my mothers dish. She is a vegetarian so she ordered a burrito (I believe it was called a California burrito) without chicken. It was supposed to have mushroom, peppers, onions, corn, beans, tomatoes and rice inside. She started eating it and said somethings missing, but she couldn't remember what was supposed to be in it, since we had ordered about an hour ago. So she waited for the waiter to come back, about 25 minutes later we got his attention and he came over and rudely asked 'what we wanted'. My mother asked to see a menu cause something was missing in the burrito, he brought her a menu and threw it on the table and walked off. So we figured out her burrito had only onions, peppers and rice in it and was supposed to have mushrooms, peppers, onions, corn, beans, tomatoes and rice. So we once again waited till we could get the waiters attention which took another 15 minutes. (we were watching our watches and keeping track) He came over and asked 'what now'? So she told him what all was missing out of her burrito and told him it was cold since we had to wait so long for him to come, and asked if she could get a new one, and have it cooked the way it was supposed to be cooked. He told her "No, you have already eaten off it, you are not getting a new one". So my mom asked if she could at least have the stuff that was missing out of the burrito cause she was paying $10 for a tortilla with only some onions, peppers and rice in it. He told her "we no longer put that stuff in that burrito, so no you can't". So I asked him why the menu had not been changed, or why we had not been told when my mom ordered the burrito and said she wanted all those veggies. He told us "it's not my problem". So I asked to speak to a manger. He then told us "I'm was not wasting his time getting you the manager". And walked off. So we just left our cold nasty food, left him no tip and went up and paid. A different dude came up to the counter you pay at, so we asked him if we could speak to a manager. And he told us "No" and walked off after we paid. I have never had such horrible service before. It was unfathomable to us how they could be so rude and still be in business. I make sure to let everyone know about the horrible service we had there!

We were visiting Kentucky from NYC for a week. Stopped by at this place must say their Chicken Fajita's are excellent. Sure the place is not perfect, but the food is quite good. The place employs spanish people and gives it a more authentic mexican feel. Service was adequate and the salsa was equally tasty, all the ingredients were fresh.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
